A general view of the Santo Amaro favela, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with the Sugarloaf in the background. The favela has not been pacified and is one of the less well known of Rio's favelas. A heavily armed police presence was inevidence and there was no trouble of any sort while we were there. According to our guide, Patrick Ashcroft, a teacher and research worker who lives in the favela, violence is rare in this favela. Photo by Andrew Tobin/Tobinators Ltd
